DIAMOND partners from Systematica and the Technological University of Dublin, have presented the project in two sessions held within the online European Transport Conference, celebrated from 9-11th September 2020.
During the session “Women and Men – aren’t we all equal?”, Dr Andrea Gorrini, Transport Research Consultant at Systematica, has presented DIAMOND’s work under the title “Unveiling the Women’s Needs as Users of Urban Railway and Bike Sharing Services”.
Gorrini has explained DIAMOND’s gender-sensitive approach for investigating women’s needs as users of urban railway infrastructure and bike sharing services based on the analysis of geolocated datasets related to land, socio-demographic and mobility characteristics through the Geographic Information Systems.
The GIS analysis helped to identify a short list of suitable metro and urban railway stations and bike sharing docking stations, which were further investigated through proprietary data related to travel demand, onsite observations focused on universal design indicators, survey questionnaires and social media data focused on women’s concerns, needs and expectations for the design of parameters influencing the inclusion of women and unveiling hidden mobility patterns within cities.
On the other hand, Dr Maria Chiara Leva, Lecturer at the Technological University of Dublin, has participated in the session “Inclusive Transport” to explain the analysis and outputs of a thorough examination of female transport professionals needs in terms of recruitment, retention and promotion in the railways, freight transport and logistics sectors.
During the presentation, titled as “Revealing actionable knowledge from data for more inclusive and fair employment in transport sector: the DIAMOND Project”, Leva described the tools and methods being used in order to analyse and gather data from women working as transport professionals in Spain, Ireland and Poland in order to reveal new insights about women’s underrepresentation in the transport sector.
The European Transport Conference (ETC 2020) is an annual event which brings together transport practitioners, researchers and professionals from all over Europe to discuss about the main challenges and policy issues and to present best practices and research projects of the Transport Industry.
